How to Properly Evaluate Bids

Class A wants you to have the best fireworks display possible. Many firework displays request proposals form several firework companies. When the proposals are received, it becomes very difficult to properly analyze the proposals due to different types of fireworks (sizes and varieties and brands). The key to a REALLY good display is proper planning.

Proper Planning
One of the regulations for fireworks is that the crowd must be 70 feet away from the point of fire for each inch in diameter of the largest firework shell. For example, if the largest shell in the display is six inches in diameter, the crowd needs to be at least 420 feet away. This is the most important factor when planning a display. If the place of firing the display is 420 ft from the audience, you certainly would not want to shoot eight-inch shells due to being out of compliance. On the other hand, you would not really want to use 2-inch firework shells, due to the shell being small and the crowd being 420 feet away (the shells would look very small from this distance). So the proper first step would be to roughly estimate how far the crowd is going to be from the point of firing the display, then plan the show around the distance.

In the example above, one would want to consider using 3”, 4”, 5”, and 6 inch shells. Most of the shells should be 4”, 5”, and six inch in diameter for the most impressive display.

Questions to ask
Before accepting a proposal:
-ask who the pyrotechnicians will be (name and their experience)
-ask what percentage of the show will be preloaded into the mortars before the display starts-(the higher percentage the better)
-will management of the fireworks company be present to insure safety and quality.
-what safety equipment will the pyrotechnicians be using (the proper answer is fireman's turnout gear, hearing protection, and fire extinguishers.
If the answers above are not answered satisfactorily then you may want to re-consider awarding the proposal to that company.
